Boris’ Cannabis Cabinet

Is legalisation coming
sooner than we think?

A Mixed
History of Support

Buzzfeed News recently reported that ‘senior members of Boris Johnson’s Number 10 team want to legalise cannabis’, going on to report that ‘a cross-party group of MPs predicted that the UK will allow recreational use of the drug within 5 to 10 years’.

Here’s a look at Johnson’s cabinet and advisors’ views on cannabis.

…and there are plenty of ministers who have admitted to smoking cannabis in the past…

Everyone is entitled to a private life before becoming an MP. I smoked weed at university and have never smoked it again since.
— Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP (Con), the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
I had about three attempts of cannabis at university, only the last time I managed to inhale and was sick
— Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP (Con), the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
At university, I tried cannabis, not very often as I was into sport
— Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP (Con), the Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State
I had a little dabble of marijuana at university
— James Cleverly MP (Con), Minister without Portfolio (Cabinet Office)

…and those still undecided on the issue.

I think we should be evidence-based on this issue and we should look at what does the evidence show us. I don’t think there’s a case for legalisation at present but I think it’s certainly something that we should keep on to review.
— Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP (Con), the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade
